5 Myths Of Plastic Sugery

1. Plastic surgery is only about vanity.

Myth. Plastic surgery can help improve self-esteem and confidence issues that affect a person’s quality of life. We see this, particularly, in our weight loss patients. These individuals have gone through a lot of hard work physically, emotionally, and mentally to get to where they are, regardless of whether they chose to do it on their own or have bariatric surgery. It takes a tremendous amount of mental dedication and lifestyle change, and patients come to us having lost all this weight yet still seeing a reflection in the mirror that doesn’t complete the entire transformation; in fact, they often see a constant reminder of their old selves. Plastic surgery completes the transformation and positively affects their self-esteem and confidence

2. Plastic surgery is scarless.

Myth. Scarring occurs whenever you have surgery, whether with laser modality or the scalpel. Our bodies heal and regenerate through scarring. As plastic surgeons, we have the skill to hide scars and create illusions that are more pleasing to the eye. However, genetics play a factor in how a patient heals. We cannot control nature, so people will still heal as indicated by their genetic makeup. As plastic surgeons, we do treat the tissue more delicately, and we reinforce our incisions in layers more than some other surgical specialties to help scars heal better and make the outcome more aesthetically pleasing.

3.Plastic surgeons are the same as cosmetic surgeons.

Myth. Cosmetic surgeons are their own specialty. They only perform cosmetic surgery. Plastic surgeons have completed years of specialized training in plastic and reconstructive surgery. As part of that training, we cover every kind of reconstruction from head to toe. We cover burns and pediatric congenital anomalies, like cleft lip and cleft palate. We cover hand surgery and, of course, cosmetic surgery. Our training is diverse, allowing us to recreate an aesthetically pleasing outcome. Cosmetic surgery is just one aspect of our extensive specialized training. This is indicated in our board certification. Many doctors have tapped into the world of plastic surgery/cosmetic surgery. These doctors include gynecologists, dermatologists, ER physicians, internists, family practice doctors, and dentists. And yes, they are board-certified; however, their board certification is in their own specialty, not the field of plastic and reconstructive surgery. This often creates a great deal of confusion for patients, and it’s important for any individual considering surgery to know the full training of their physician.

4.Plastic surgery under anesthesia is unsafe.

Myth. Unfortunately, social media has become a very popular platform for patients to get information. As much as it can be a valuable tool, it also comes with the circulation of misinformation, opinions, and myths. A qualified plastic surgeon can deliver safe and healthy aesthetic results. A qualified anesthesiologist can provide safe anesthesia. The notion that surgery or anesthesia is universally unsafe is a myth. The key takeaway is to be evaluated by a board-certified plastic surgeon to ensure you are a good candidate for the procedure and for undergoing anesthesia.

5.If you have plastic surgery, you will look like a different person.

Myth. We live in a world today where things are very extreme, and, unfortunately, there are cases where we see individuals who look different or even cartoonish after plastic surgery. There are cases where bad decisions or outcomes happen, and these become exasperated on the internet and social platforms. However, these cases aren’t the norm, and if you choose to have a procedure, you don’t ever have to look ‘like you’ve had work done.’ You can have subtle and natural-looking changes and improve your aesthetic in many ways. It’s important to do your research and share your goals with your doctor so that you are aligned in the outcome.
