What Is Labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty, or labia reduction, is a surgical procedure that will reduce and/or reshape the labia minora, the skin that covers the female clitoris and vaginal opening. In some instances, women with large labia can experience pain during intercourse or feel discomfort during everyday activities or when wearing tight-fitting clothing. Others may feel unattractive or may wish to enhance their sexual experiences by removing some of the skin that covers the clitoris.

The purpose of a labiaplasty is to better define the inner labia. During this procedure, the urethral opening can be redefined, and if necessary, improvements to the vagina may be made. The problem can be caused by genetics, sexual intercourse, or difficulties in childbirth.

Am I a Good Candidate for Labiaplasty?

You may be a good candidate for labiaplasty if you have one or more of the following conditions:

  • If you experience sexual dysfunction or embarrassment because your labia (labia minora) are over-sized or asymmetrical
  • If you dislike the large size or shape of your labia, which may cause inelegance or awkwardness with a sexual partner

You can discuss your desire for labiaplasty with Dr. Anahita Azharian during a consultation at Magnolia Plastic Surgery Center. Her expertise with labia reduction has enhanced the lives of women throughout the Tampa area.

What Is the Process for Labiaplasty?

During the operation, your labia reduction surgeon removes the excess tissue of the labia minora. The labia majora (on the outside of the body) may also be reduced by surgery or liposuction. This outpatient procedure takes around one to two hours to perform under local, twilight, or general anesthesia. The results of a labia reduction are permanent, though it is possible for the labia to become stretched again through pregnancy and childbirth or sexual activity.

Because of her experience with labiaplasty, Dr. Azharian can provide detailed information about the procedure. Labia reduction has made a difference for hundreds of women from Wesley Chapel, St. Petersburg, and across Tampa Bay.

What Does Recovery from Labiaplasty Entail?

When you undergo a labiaplasty, you will probably experience mild to moderate discomfort and swelling. Most of the pain should subside within several days, and the swelling should disappear within six weeks, during which you may need to wear supportive undergarments. The majority of labia reduction patients can return to work in two to five days.

The staff at Magnolia Plastic Surgery Center will closely monitor your healing with a series of follow-up appointments. We are also available to answer any questions or address any concerns you may have about your labia reduction. Dr. Azharian has been the physician of choice for many residents of Wesley Chapel, St. Petersburg, and Tampa Bay.

Can I See Labiaplasty Before and After Photos?

Surgery is a big decision, and like all big decisions, you should gather as much information as possible. Of the research tools at your disposal, nothing is quite as effective as images illustrating the results of the procedure. Labia reduction before and after pictures are an excellent resource during your decision process. Dr. Azharian has her own collection of labia reduction before and after photos that she would be pleased to show you.
